Tragedy Strikes Aba: Gunmen Attack Police Team, Kill Inspector and Three Civilians

A devastating incident occurred in Aba, Abia State, on July 21, 2024, when gunmen attacked a police patrol team, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives, including a police Inspector and three civilians. This brazen attack has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many in a state of grief and fear.According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen, operating in a Toyota Sienna bus, opened fire on the police team along Mosque street by Ngwa road, Aba.

Despite the police team’s valiant efforts to repel the attack, Inspector Shehu Oyibo and three civilians, Chika Godliveth, Onyeaturuchi Jonah, and Eniobong God’sgift Clement, succumbed to their injuries and lost their lives.The police team’s swift response, however, prevented further carnage, and two of the gunmen were neutralised in the ensuing exchange of gunfire. Unfortunately, others escaped with bullet wounds, leaving the community on high alert.

The Abia State Police Command has assured the public that the corpses have been deposited at a morgue and an investigation is underway to apprehend the fleeing assailants. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, urged residents to report any suspicious movements or individuals with bullet injuries to the police.This tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of the community, particularly in the wake of a similar attack three weeks prior, which claimed the lives of two policemen at Opobo junction, Ogbor Hill Aba.

The people of Aba demand justice and effective measures to prevent such senseless violence in the future.In the meantime, the community comes together to mourn the loss of these innocent lives and offer support to the families affected by this senseless tragedy.
