Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, has sounded the alarm over the growing threat posed by notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. Shinkafi is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action against Turji, who recently released a video clip daring security agents to release his cousin, Bello Wurge, arrested at Shinkafi General Hospital.
In the video, Turji threatened to launch relentless attacks on towns and villages within Shinkafi, Zurmi in Zamfara State, and Isa communities in Sokoto State. He also vowed to revive the kidnapping of inhabitants from these areas for ransom, sending shockwaves throughout the region. Shinkafi lamented that Turji’s threats have created a sense of panic, with villagers fleeing to major towns for safety.
Shinkafi emphasized that the issue of banditry transcends political affiliations and urged critical stakeholders in Sokoto and Zamfara states to form a coalition to meet with President Tinubu and request his intervention. He stressed that the government has a responsibility to protect the lives and property of its citizens, warning that inaction could lead to the destruction of many towns and villages at the hands of Turji.
The APC chieftain also criticized the failure of security agencies to take action against notorious bandits, describing it as a conspiracy. He emphasized that the time has come for the military to take decisive action and clear the bandits from the region, allowing farmers to resume their activities. Shinkafi noted that over 85% of farmland in Zamfara State remained uncultivated during the rainy season due to the actions of bandits.
Shinkafi’s plea comes as President Tinubu has assured Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State that he is committed to ending the menace of banditry in the state. The president has ordered a sustained military onslaught and the deployment of additional troops to Zamfara State.
