The Yoruba Union has expressed strong disapproval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, particularly
concerning the recent arrests of military officers allegedly involved in a coup plot. The union has called for a public trial to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation. In late September 2025,
reports emerged that sixteen senior military officers, including a brigadier general and a colonel, were arrested for
allegedly planning to overthrow President Tinubu’s government. The officers were reportedly detained after intelligence
revealed they had been holding secret meetings and expressing discontent with the administration. The Defence Headquarters initially attributed the arrests
to issues of career stagnation and professional misconduct among the officers . However, subsequent reports
indicated that the arrests were indeed linked to a foiled coup plot. A senior intelligence official revealed that the
officers had been planning to stage a coup and take over the government, which led to the cancellation of the Independence Day parade scheduled for October 1, 2025 .
The Yoruba Union has criticized President Tinubu’s handling of the situation, questioning the lack of transparency and
public accountability. The union has demanded that the arrested officers be publicly tried to ensure that the
investigation is conducted fairly and openly. They argue that a public trial would uphold the principles of justice and prevent
any cover-up of the alleged plot. The Yoruba Union’s call for a public trial reflects broader concerns about governance and
accountability in Nigeria. The union emphasizes the need for the government to demonstrate its commitment to
democratic principles by ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their status, are held accountable for their actions.
