The immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has returned home to a hero’s welcome after his release from Kuje prison. His successor, Governor Usman Ododo, and supporters were on hand to celebrate his return, as seen in a video circulating online.
Bello’s release came after Justice MaryAnne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court granted him bail in the sum of N500 million. The bail conditions stipulated that Bello provide three sureties, each owning property in high-value areas of Abuja, such as Maitama, Guzape, or Asokoro. Additionally, Bello was ordered to surrender his passport and restricted from traveling out of Nigeria without prior permission.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Bello, along with Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu, on a 16-count charge of conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and unlawful possession of property. All three have pleaded not guilty.
This development comes after Justice Anenih initially rejected Bello’s bail application on procedural grounds but granted bail to his co-defendants. Bello’s release has sparked widespread celebration among his supporters, who gathered to welcome him home.
The case against Bello and his co-defendants is ongoing, with many Nigerians watching closely to see how the justice system will handle the high-profile case.
