U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has pledged to hold accountable those responsible for the alleged genocide against Christians in
Nigeria. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Cruz stated that the U.S. government is aware of the individuals behind these atrocities and emphasized the need for accountability.
He criticized the Nigerian government’s failure to address the violence, particularly the attacks by Fulani militants in the Middle Belt region, including Benue State.
The senator’s remarks come amidst growing concerns over the escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria. Reports indicate that more than 200
Christian villagers were killed in a recent attack by Fulani jihadists in Yelwata, a farming community in Guma County, Benue State.
This incident is part of a disturbing wave of targeted violence that has swept across central Nigeria in recent weeks.
Witnesses and local leaders have accused Fulani militants of engaging in acts of terrorism, including theft, vandalism, kidnapping, and rape, often with impunity.
In response to these developments, Senator Cruz has introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act.
The proposed legislation aims to impose sanctions on Nigerian officials and entities complicit in or responsible for the persecution of religious minorities, particularly Christians.
Cruz emphasized that the U.S. must take a firm stance to protect religious freedom and hold violators accountable.
The Nigerian government has dismissed allegations of genocide, with President Bola Tinubu’s aide, Bayo Onanuga, labeling Cruz’s claims as “malicious, contrived lies.”
Onanuga asserted that Nigeria does not have a religious war and criticized the portrayal of the situation as misleading.
He cautioned against sanctions, warning that they could distort facts and weaken diplomatic relations.Despite the Nigerian government’s rebuttal, international human
rights organizations and religious groups continue to advocate for stronger actions to address the ongoing persecution.
