Two US-based Nigerians, identified as Chukwemeka and Emmanuel, are facing a 40-year jail term for their involvement in a romance scam that targeted elderly American women.
The duo allegedly used fake online profiles and deceitful tactics to defraud their victims of millions of dollars. According to court documents, the scammers created fake online profiles on dating websites and social media platforms, posing as American soldiers or businessmen.
They would then build relationships with their victims, gaining their trust and eventually asking for money to cover fictional expenses, such as medical bills or travel costs. The victims of the scam were mostly elderly American women, who were manipulated into sending money to the scammers. In some cases, the victims were convinced to send large sums of money, including their life savings.
The investigation into the scam was led by the FBI, which worked in conjunction with the US Department of Justice. The duo was arrested in 2022 and has been in custody ever since.
Chukwemeka and Emmanuel are facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. If convicted, they face up to 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million. The romance scam has highlighted the need
for increased awareness and vigilance when it comes to online relationships. The scam has also underscored the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to combat cybercrime.
