A coalition of transporters, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) chapters, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has vehemently rejected the proposed reintroduction of highway tolling in the country. The groups have expressed strong reservations about the potential impact of tolling on the cost of living, transportation, and the overall economy.According to the transporters, the proposed tolling system would lead to a significant increase in transportation costs, which would ultimately be passed on to consumers. This, they argue, would exacerbate the already high cost of living in the country.The NLC and TUC chapters have also weighed in on the issue, emphasizing the need for the government to explore alternative revenue generation strategies that do not disproportionately burden the working class. The labour unions have cautioned that the reintroduction of highway tolling could lead to industrial unrest and protests.The opposition to highway tolling comes as the Federal Government is exploring ways to generate additional revenue to fund infrastructure projects. While the government has argued that tolling is a necessary measure to maintain and expand the country’s road network, the transporters and labour unions remain unconvinced.As the debate over highway tolling continues, it remains to be seen whether the government will heed the concerns of the transporters and labour unions or press ahead with its plans to reintroduce tolling.
