A tragic boat accident in Nafada town, Gombe State, has claimed the lives of at least five teenage girls, leaving the community in deep mourning.
SPYRONEWS reports that the victims have been identified as Najib Ibrahim (18), Hauwa’u Dogal (15), Ummati Baraya (16), Umaira Gidado (16), and Amina Jaliya (15).
Confirming the sad development, the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, through his media aide,
Ismaila Uba-Misilli, expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss in a condolence message released on Sunday.
Governor Yahaya described the incident as painful and heart-wrenching, especially considering the tender ages of
the victims and the unbearable grief it brought upon their families.
“This tragic incident has cut short the lives of promising young people,” the governor said, while extending his
heartfelt condolences to the bereaved parents and the entire Nafada community.
He added that the loss was not only a personal tragedy for the affected families but also a devastating blow to the entire state.
The governor prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and asked God to grant their families the strength to endure the heartbreaking loss.
“May the Almighty comfort the families and give them the fortitude to bear this great loss,” Yahaya said.
Governor Yahaya also emphasized the importance of strict compliance with water transport safety measures to
prevent similar tragedies in the future.
He directed local councils, community leaders, and boat operators to enforce safety protocols across all riverine
communities in the state, stressing that negligence and disregard for safety standards must be discouraged.
In his statement, the governor further instructed the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (GSEMA) and the
Nafada Local Government Council to provide immediate assistance and relief to the bereaved families.
The Nafada community has been thrown into mourning as residents continue to grieve the loss of the young girls, who
were described as bright and full of promise before their untimely deaths.
