began in 2015.Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), is a distinguished legal scholar and administrator with over 34 years of
academic and professional experience. He currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration at the University of Jos.
Amupitan hails from Aiyetoro-Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State and has been a trusted legal advisor to Senator Dino Melaye for over a decade.
The nomination is expected to be formalized at a meeting of the Council of State scheduled for Thursday in Abuja. This appointment is particularly timely as it
positions Professor Amupitan to oversee the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election, slated for November 8, 2025.
The decision to appoint Amupitan follows reports of tensions between President Tinubu and the outgoing INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu.
Sources indicate that Yakubu’s recent actions, including efforts to register new political parties and alleged support for a gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, were
viewed unfavorably by the presidency. In response, President Tinubu directed Yakubu to proceed on terminal leave ahead of the expiration of his tenure.
As the nomination awaits official confirmation, political observers and civil society organizations are closely monitoring the process.
