A swift response from the Kwara State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service on Saturday saved a multi-million naira property from destruction at the popular Ipata market in Ilorin, the state capital. The fire incident, which engulfed the Haruna Kannike Shopping Complex housing 25 shops and 44 rooms, was caused by a power surge.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire outbreak occurred at approximately 1:10 pm on Saturday, December 14, 2024. The Kwara State Fire Service responded promptly to a distress call, arriving at the scene with a fire truck and crew. Despite the challenging situation, the gallant firefighters contained the blaze, extinguished it completely, and prevented it from spreading to other parts of the market.
Preliminary investigations revealed that parts of Ilorin had experienced a power outage lasting nearly five days. Shortly after electricity was restored by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), a power surge occurred, igniting the fire on the upper floor. Fortunately, the timely intervention of the fire services saved 22 rooms and all 25 shops from destruction, although 22 rooms were affected by the fire.
The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, urged the public to adopt safety measures to prevent fire outbreaks. He emphasized the importance of unplugging electrical appliances when not in use, stating, “This simple precaution can go a long way in preventing fires and protecting lives and property.”
The successful collaboration between the Kwara State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service demonstrates the strong synergy between the two agencies. Their prompt response and effective firefighting efforts saved the day, preventing what could have been a catastrophic loss of property and lives.
