A wave of tension has swept through the Isinkan community, headquarters of Akure West LCDA in Ondo State, following the disruption of an ongoing housing project by suspected land grabbers. The intruders, reportedly armed with dangerous weapons, stormed the site in a convoy, drove away workers, and allegedly destroyed equipment.

According to sources, the land grabbers acted on the orders of the Deji of Akureland, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo. However, the Secretary of the families owning the land, Mr. Akin Akinwumi, insisted that the property belongs to the descendants of late Chief Akin Agbi, Pa Fanibuyan, and Akinwumi.

Akinwumi explained that the land has been in their family for over 500 years, granted to their forefathers by the Iralepo of Isinkan. He added that they conducted a perimeter survey, laid out the property, and sold it to PWAN Homes Ltd. as part of a development project.

The Iralepo of Isinkan, Oba Oluwagbemiga Olofin-Adimula, condemned the alleged disruption, urging the Ondo State Police Command to investigate and bring the culprits to justice. The monarch noted that this is not the first time they have faced such intimidation, accusing the Deji of Akureland of undermining peace in the state capital.

The disputed land, located at Mile 13/14 Ajegunle on Ondo Road, Isinkan, had been surveyed and approved by government agencies. The incident has raised concerns about the increasing cases of land grabbing in Ondo State, with many calling for urgent action to address the issue.

In a related development, the Lagos State House of Assembly has held a public hearing on land grabbing, with lawmakers agreeing to organize a stakeholders’ meeting to address the problem ¹. The meeting is expected to involve the Lagos State Government, the Nigeria Police, the Judiciary, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.

The Lagos State Government has also established a Special Task Force on land grabbers, with the mandate to reduce the activities of land grabbers and protect the rights of property owners ¹. The task force is expected to collaborate with relevant government agencies and security officials to achieve its objectives.
