A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ghali Mustafa Tijani, has publicly rejected the proposed Tax Reform Bills, citing their anti-people and capitalist nature. Tijani, who represents the Ajingi/Albasu/Gaya Federal Constituency, expressed his reservations about the bills, stating that they do not align with public interest and are not pro-masses.
Speaking on his personal position on Monday, Tijani revealed that he has a corporate finance background and had thoroughly reviewed the four Tax Reform Bills forwarded to both chambers of the National Assembly. He emphasized that the bills are capitalist in nature and are designed to siphon the poor.
Tijani believes that the bills do not serve the interests of the masses and are instead designed to benefit the wealthy.
The lawmaker argued that the bills do not contain provisions that would benefit the poor and vulnerable segments of society.
Tijani alleged that the bills are part of a larger capitalist agenda aimed at exploiting the poor and vulnerable.
In a statement, the presidency responded to the controversy surrounding the Tax Reform Bills, emphasizing that the bills aim to enhance the quality of life for Nigerians, especially the disadvantaged. The presidency also encouraged leaders across the country to participate in the public hearing organized by the National Assembly to present their views on the bills.
Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, called for the devolution of power from the federal government to the states and local governments, emphasizing that this would lead to more effective governance and equitable revenue sharing.
Senator Seriake Dickson, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, expressed confidence that the National Assembly would pass the Tax Reform Bills, despite opposition from some quarters.
In conclusion, the Tax Reform Bills have generated significant controversy, with Hon. Tijani rejecting the proposed legislation due to its anti-people and capitalist nature.
