“Human rights advocate and political figure Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has accused both the Nigerian government and the United States of hypocrisy in their handling of violence in Nigeria. He says the killings across the country amount to a genocide targeting everyone — the poor, Muslims, Christians, and children. According to Sowore, the reality of violence in Nigeria is being misrepresented by some foreign powers who insist it is only Christians being persecuted. During his remarks, he challenged those foreign observers:> “There’s genocide against the poor in this country, there’s genocide against Muslims in this country, there’s genocide against Christians in this country, there’s genocide against children in this country. To now separate it and say maybe it’s one religion or the other, that’s dishonest.” He further asked why the United States, when responding to crises globally, treats Nigeria’s insecurity through a religious prism. He said such framing ignores the fact that mass atrocities happen to people of all faiths. “Why is the U.S. not taking the same position in Gaza, where there’s genocide against Muslims by Israel?” Sowore asked. Sowore argued that insecurity in Nigeria is not driven by religion alone, but by leadership failures and a breakdown of governance. He noted that violence occurs in many regions, especially in the North, where both Muslims and Christians are victimized. He cited the example of mosques being attacked and individuals killed, regardless of their religion. He warned that focusing only on Christian persecution gives leaders an excuse to evade accountability. According to Sowore, when violence is broadly labelled as a religious conflict, it dilutes the responsibility of those in power. Unless corruption and insecurity are addressed across the board, citizens of all faiths will continue to suffer.
