A former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, has revealed that several individuals currently occupying top positions in government across Nigeria are ex-convicts.
Ejiofor made this disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the state of the nation, governance, and issues
surrounding corruption and accountability among public officeholders.According to him, it is disturbing that some individuals who have been convicted of criminal
offences in the past now hold powerful positions in government. He emphasized that the situation highlights a deep moral and ethical crisis within the Nigerian political system.
He said: “We have situations in this country where people who were once convicted of crimes, even outside the country, are now holding government offices.
It’s a shame that the system allows such people to return to power despite their criminal past.” Ejiofor stressed that the problem is not only with those occupying
the offices but also with the Nigerian system that enables such occurrences. He noted that the lack of proper background checks, political godfatherism, and weak enforcement of existing laws contribute to this worrisome trend. The former DSS boss urged Nigerians to demand greater accountability and integrity from those in public service, insisting that leadership must be built on trust and moral character.“The citizens must wake up and begin to question those they elect or appoint into public offices. If we continue to reward corruption and overlook integrity, then the cycle of bad governance will persist,” he warned.Ejiofor further advised security agencies and anti-corruption bodies to intensify efforts in vetting public officials and ensuring that no one with a criminal record or history of corruption is allowed to occupy sensitive positions in government. He concluded by stating that Nigeria’s development and stability depend largely on having credible and upright individuals in leadership positions who are committed to the country’s progress and not personal gain.
