Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has sounded the alarm over the emergence of a new terrorist group, Lakurawa, in Sokoto State, expressing
concerns that it will expand the theatre of operations in Nigeria’s already complex battle against terrorism. The Defence Headquarters recently confirmed the group’s presence in the
North-western region, where they’re reportedly making life unbearable for residents. Senator Sani took to his official X handle to share his thoughts, reflecting on the decade-long struggle against Boko Haram insurgents in Borno and Yobe States. He noted that the people of these states have endured unimaginable evil and cruelty, yet remain resilient. Despite the challenges, Sani expressed confidence that Nigeria will ultimately prevail over the terrorists.
The emergence of Lakurawa raises concerns about the growing threat of terrorism in Nigeria. Boko Haram, another terrorist group, has been responsible for the displacement of 2.5 million Nigerians and the deaths of over 30,000 people since 2009 ¹. The group’s ideology and tactics have alienated many Nigerians, making it difficult for them to recruit new members.
In recent years, Nigeria has faced increasing intercommunal violence between Muslim Fulani herdsmen and Christian Hausa farming communities. The situation is further complicated by the presence of armed bandits, who have been designated as a terrorist organization by the government.
As Nigeria struggles to contain the spread of terrorism, Senator Sani’s concerns highlight the need for a coordinated response to address the root causes of extremism and protect vulnerable communities.
