The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to summon the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and top officials of local airlines to answer questions over reported
safety breaches in the country’s aviation sector. The move comes amid growing public concern about air travel safety and recent incidents involving domestic carriers.
According to a statement from the Senate Committee on Aviation, the hearing aims to examine the causes of repeated safety lapses, assess compliance with aviation
regulations, and ensure that airlines uphold the highest safety standards for passengers and crew. The committee emphasized that the oversight is part of its constitutional duty to safeguard the welfare of Nigerians.
Senators are expected to question NCAA Director-General, Captain Rabiu Yadudu, and senior executives from major airlines operating in Nigeria about maintenance
protocols, pilot training, aircraft certification, and emergency preparedness. The inquiry will also investigate whether local airlines are adhering to international safety benchmarks set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Speaking on the planned grilling, Senator Clifford Ordia, Chairman of the Aviation Committee, said, “We cannot compromise on the safety of Nigerians. Any negligence
or breach of protocol by airlines or the regulatory authority will be addressed decisively. The Senate is committed to ensuring accountability in the aviation sector.”
