In a surprising turn of events, Reno Omokri, a former media aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has declared Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election, as the number one opposition figure in Nigeria. This endorsement comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, where Omokri had previously supported Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president.Omokri, known for his outspoken views, made this declaration in a Facebook post on Friday, stating that “Peter Obi is currently the Number One opposition figure in Nigeria. Bar none.” He further emphasized that any other politician claiming to be a bigger opposition figure is simply delusional. Omokri’s admiration for Obi stems from his resilience in the face of obstacles. However, he also offered some constructive criticism, suggesting that Obi could go further if he were less Igbo-centric, encouraged his supporters to use persuasive language, and apologized for his previous “Yes Daddy” comment, which was perceived as a religious war remark against the Muslim Ummah. This endorsement is significant, as it indicates a shift in Omokri’s support from Atiku Abubakar to Peter Obi. It also highlights Obi’s growing influence as a key opposition figure in Nigerian politics.
