Supporters of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, have vowed to continue their protest despite stern warnings from security agencies. The demonstrators, rallying under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanu, said they will proceed with their planned march to Aso Villa in Abuja to demand the unconditional release of the separatist leader.
The protesters, made up of members of civil rights groups, IPOB sympathizers, and pro-democracy activists, gathered at key locations in the Federal Capital Territory, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards calling for justice and freedom for Kanu.
Despite the presence of armed security operatives around major routes leading to the Presidential Villa, the demonstrators insisted that their protest would remain peaceful. They accused the Federal Government of ignoring court orders granting Kanu bail and described his prolonged detention as a violation of his fundamental human rights.
Speaking to journalists, one of the protest coordinators, Comrade Ifeanyi Eze, said, “We are not here to cause trouble. We are here to demand justice. The courts have spoken, and it is time for the government to obey the law. Keeping Nnamdi Kanu in detention despite court rulings is an affront to democracy.”
Security agencies had earlier issued warnings against unauthorized protests in Abuja, citing concerns over possible disruptions to public order. However, participants in the #FreeNnamdiKanu march vowed to continue their peaceful demonstration until the government responds to their demands.
Reports indicate that the protesters plan to submit a formal petition to the Presidency and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), urging immediate compliance with judicial directives on Kanu’s release.
The detained IPOB leader has been in custody since 2021 on charges related to treasonable felony and other offenses linked to the agitation for the independence of the southeastern region. His continued detention has sparked repeated calls from local and international human rights organizations for his release.
As tensions continue to build, the government has appealed for calm, assuring that national security and the rule of law will guide its handling of the matter.
