President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Justice and the National Assembly to address concerns raised about the Tax Reform Bills currently before the Parliament. The president’s directive comes after his transmission of the Tax Reform Bills to the National Assembly sparked widespread criticism, with the most vocal opposition coming from the northern part of Nigeria.

According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government welcomes meaningful inputs that can address whatever grey areas there may be in the bill. Idris emphasized that President Tinubu remains committed to accountability and views the debates surrounding the bills as both “welcome and commendable”.

The minister also dismissed claims that the tax reform bills were targeted at impoverishing some states, labeling them as “fake news” and “misinformation.” Instead, Idris explained that the fiscal reforms will bring relief to tens of millions of hardworking Nigerians across the country and empower and position states and local governments for sustainable growth and development.

President Tinubu’s directive is a clear indication of his commitment to transparency and accountability. By working closely with the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Justice can ensure that all genuine concerns are addressed before the bills are passed. This collaborative approach will not only strengthen the country’s fiscal framework but also promote economic growth and development.

In addition, the minister emphasized the need for civility in public discourse, stating that there should be no room for name-calling or the injection of unnecessary ethnic and regional slurs into the national conversation. This call for civility is timely, as it will help to promote a more constructive and respectful debate on the tax reform bills.

Overall, President Tinubu’s directive is a positive step towards addressing concerns raised about the Tax Reform Bills. By working together, the Federal Ministry of Justice, the National Assembly, and other stakeholders can ensure that the bills are passed in a way that benefits all Nigerians.
