The Presidency has come out to vehemently deny reports suggesting that former President Muhammadu Buhari was forced to testify in an arbitration proceeding in Paris.
This denial comes on the heels of widespread speculation regarding the circumstances surrounding Buhari’s appearance in court. According to reports, Buhari’s testimony was sought in connection with a $6 billion power generation and distribution contract awarded to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company of Nigeria by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003.
The contract has been mired in controversy, with allegations of breach of contract and bribery.The Presidency’s denial is seen as an attempt to quell rumors of a rift between the current administration and the former president. However, some sources suggest that Buhari was indeed reluctant to testify and had to be persuaded by the Attorney-General, Lateef Fagbemi, who visited him at his residence in Daura.
The arbitration proceeding is being held at the International Chamber of Commerce Court of Arbitration in Paris, with Buhari’s testimony being a crucial part of the case.
