In his 2025 World Day of Peace message, Pope Francis emphasized the need for debt forgiveness to enable impoverished countries to break free from the shackles of international debt and embark on a path of sustainable development. The Pope’s message, themed “Forgive Us Our Trespasses, Grant Us Your Peace,” was released on January 1, as part of the annual tradition to promote peace and harmony worldwide.
Pope Francis’s appeal for debt forgiveness is rooted in the conviction that economic burdens hinder the growth and prosperity of indebted nations. By forgiving debts, the Pope believes that these countries can redirect their resources towards vital development projects, ultimately fostering global peace and stability.
The Pope’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of economic justice and the need for collective action to address the root causes of poverty and inequality. As the world grapples with the challenges of economic inequality, climate change, and social injustice, Pope Francis’s call for debt forgiveness offers a beacon of hope for a more equitable and peaceful world.
