In a shocking incident, operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command intervened to rescue a father of three from an angry mob at the Itam Timber Market in Uyo, the state capital.

The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was caught attempting to discreetly dispose of his child’s corpse, wrapped in a carton and concealed with ragged clothes, at a waste dump site.

Eyewitnesses revealed that concerned onlookers had been monitoring the man’s suspicious behavior, noticing him carrying the carton on his head towards the waste bin site. As he was accompanied by his two other minor sons, the mob’s suspicions grew, leading to his confrontation.

Upon intercepting the man, the mob discovered the lifeless body of his child, neatly wrapped in torn clothes, inside the carton. A viral video captured the chaotic scene, showing the father engaging in a physical altercation with his accusers, who alleged he was a ritualist, before police intervention.

According to Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, the police promptly rescued the man from the mob and initiated investigations. During interrogation, the man, a native of Anambra State, explained that he was transporting his son’s corpse to their village for burial, adhering to Igbo tradition, which dictates that male children should not be buried outside their community.

ASP John clarified that preliminary findings indicate the man did not kill his child, and the corpse has been deposited in the morgue. The police are working to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The police spokesperson emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and the truth will be revealed once concluded. The incident has sparked mixed reactions, with some sympathizing with the grieving father and others questioning his actions.

As the police continue to unravel the facts, the community remains shaken by the dramatic events. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity and the need for thorough investigations in complex cases.

Residents of Itam Timber Market expressed shock and outrage, with some calling for greater vigilance to prevent similar incidents. Others highlighted the importance of respecting cultural traditions while ensuring the law is upheld.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to thorough investigations and maintaining law and order in the community.
