The Nigeria Police Force has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at combating the increasing rate of
cybercrime across the country. This new initiative seeks to educate citizens about online safety and promote responsible use
of digital platforms to prevent becoming victims of cyber threats. Speaking during the official launch of the campaign in
Abuja, the Inspector General of Police emphasized that cybercrime remains one of the fastest-growing security challenges
globally, adding that Nigeria is not exempt from its devastating impact on individuals, businesses, and government institutions. He explained that the awareness
campaign is designed to equip Nigerians with the knowledge to recognize and avoid various forms of online fraud such as
phishing, identity theft, hacking, and other internet-related crimes. According to him, the initiative will also help reduce cases of financial loss, data breaches, and
reputational damage often caused by cybercriminals.The Police chief further revealed that the campaign will involve a series of sensitization programs across
schools, markets, religious centers, and communities nationwide. These programs will include workshops, seminars, and digital literacy training sessions aimed at
teaching citizens the importance of cyber hygiene.He also assured that the Nigeria Police Force, through its Cybercrime Unit,
will continue to collaborate with relevant government agencies, telecommunications companies, and international partners to
track down cyber offenders and ensure they face the full weight of the law.The Force urged Nigerians to be cautious when
sharing personal information online and to immediately report any suspicious online activities to the nearest police station or through official digital reporting channels.
Highlighting the role of the public in tackling cyber threats, the Police spokesperson stressed that digital security
is a shared responsibility. He advised users to install reliable antivirus software, avoid clicking suspicious links, and update passwords regularly to stay safe online.
The new campaign aligns with the government’s broader efforts to strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure and protect national data integrity amid rising cases of online fraud and digital scams.
