The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has categorically denied rumors that it has reserved its 2027 presidential ticket for former President Goodluck Jonathan. This clarification was made by the party’s deputy national publicity secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, in an interview with BBC Hausa.

Abdullahi emphasized that while Jonathan has the constitutional right to contest for the presidency again, the PDP has not extended an invitation for him to run on its platform. He noted that Jonathan, as a bonafide member of the PDP, is free to participate in the party’s primary elections, but the party will not persuade him to do so.

The PDP spokesperson highlighted the party’s rich pool of potential presidential aspirants, including its 12 governors and numerous prominent politicians. He stressed that the party will not wait for one individual, underscoring its commitment to democratic principles and internal competition.

Abdullahi also recalled that Jonathan was previously courted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019, following President Muhammadu Buhari’s completion of his tenure. This, he argued, demonstrates that Jonathan’s political value is recognized across party lines.

As the PDP navigates its internal dynamics and prepares for the 2027 presidential election, Abdullahi’s statement provides clarity on the party’s position regarding Jonathan’s potential candidacy. While the door remains open for Jonathan to participate in the PDP’s primary elections, the party will not reserve its ticket for him or any other individual.
