Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his commitment to ensuring that justice is served in the tragic death of 35 children during a Christmas funfair stampede in Ibadan on December 11, 2024. Makinde emphasized that no life is greater or more important than another, and that the closeness of the event organizers to him would not influence the outcome of the investigation.
The governor’s statement came after a viral video surfaced on social media, where he expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public that the organizers of the event have been arrested and will face prosecution. The event, which was spearheaded by Evang. Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Oriyomi Hamzat, an Ibadan-based popular broadcaster and philanthropist, resulted in the deaths of 35 children due to a stampede at the Islamic High School venue in Bashorun, Ibadan.
Makinde noted that the investigation is ongoing and that anyone found guilty would not be freed, while the innocent would not be condemned under his watch. He also cited a personal experience where he rejected a life insurance policy that designated his life as more important than that of his car driver, emphasizing that all lives are equal.
The governor’s commitment to justice and accountability has been welcomed by many, who see it as a step in the right direction towards preventing such tragedies in the future.
