A recent video featuring retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Esther Marcus has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. In the video, Marcus alleged that after dedicating 35 years of service to the Nigeria Police Force, she received a meager N1.7 million as gratuity. To make matters worse, she was subsequently placed on a N40,000 monthly pension. Popular activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was among those who expressed their discontent with the situation. Sowore took to social media to lament the alleged payment, stating that “Nigeria does nothing but evil to its workers.” He described the report as a sad reality, highlighting the stark contrast between the treatment of Nigerian workers and that of the country’s senators, who are entitled to N29 million per month.Sowore’s sentiments were echoed by many who feel that the gratuity paid to retired police officers is grossly inadequate. In fact, some reports suggest that police retirees may receive as little as N1.8 million as gratuity, whereas those in other security agencies may receive up to N10 million ¹.The issue of gratuity payments for retired police officers has sparked a national conversation about the need for fair compensation and adequate pension plans for Nigerian workers. As Sowore so aptly put it, “How on earth is anyone who worked for 35 years paid N1.7m ($1,100) as gratuity?” It is indeed a sad reality that highlights the need for urgent reform.
