The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former Nigerian Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, as the head of its Election Observation Mission for the upcoming presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire, scheduled for October 25, 2025.
According to a statement from the ECOWAS Commission, Prof. Osinbajo will lead a team of highly respected West African observers tasked with monitoring the electoral process to ensure it is peaceful, transparent, and credible. The mission’s deployment forms part of ECOWAS’s broader mandate to promote democracy, peace, and stability within the region.
The observation team will engage key political stakeholders, civil society groups, security agencies, and the electoral commission of Côte d’Ivoire to assess the level of preparedness and ensure compliance with democratic standards. The observers will also collaborate with other international and regional monitoring bodies to enhance coordination and transparency during the polls.
ECOWAS stated that the mission will be guided by the principles outlined in its Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which emphasizes respect for human rights, rule of law, and the integrity of the electoral process.
By appointing Prof. Osinbajo, ECOWAS reaffirmed its confidence in his experience, integrity, and diplomatic skill, citing his track record as a statesman and advocate of democratic governance in Africa. His leadership is expected to contribute significantly to ensuring a credible election that reflects the will of the Ivorian people.
The regional body also reiterated its commitment to supporting Côte d’Ivoire in maintaining peace and stability before, during, and after the election, in line with its mission to strengthen democratic institutions across West Africa.
