The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, held a historic meeting on Friday in Lagos,
reaffirming their shared vision to promote unity, preserve the rich Yoruba cultural heritage, and foster mutual respect among traditional institutions across Yorubaland.
The meeting, which took place at the Eko Hotel Signature Building, was convened by the Odole Oodua of The Source, Sir Dr
Kessington Adebutu, as part of activities commemorating his birthday celebration.
At the end of the session, both monarchs issued a joint communiqué announcing the establishment of the Joint Council for
Yoruba Unity, a collaborative forum designed to enhance peace, cultural preservation, and socioeconomic progress throughout Yoruba communities.
According to the communiqué, the gathering marked a “turning point in Yoruba history,” underscoring that unity
and collective advancement are the cornerstones of the Yoruba nation.
“Today signifies a defining moment in our collective journey. We renew our unwavering commitment to promoting
harmony among all Yoruba sons and daughters and to uphold the enduring
values of brotherhood and respect passed down by our ancestors,” the communiqué stated.
The event brought together distinguished Yoruba personalities, including traditional rulers, elders, and cultural
custodians, who collectively discussed strategies to strengthen inter-kingdom relations. The discussions also
encouraged reconciliation, peacebuilding, and collaboration among Yoruba monarchs to ensure lasting unity across the region.
In their closing prayers, the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo jointly sought divine blessings for peace, prosperity,
and progress not only in Yorubaland but across Nigeria and the African continent. The meeting concluded with a symbolic
exchange of royal blessings and goodwill between the two ancient thrones a gesture widely regarded as a beacon of hope for Yoruba solidarity.
Expressing his delight, Sir Kessington Adebutu lauded the unprecedented show of brotherhood between the two
monarchs. He described the meeting as “a milestone that will consolidate peace, unity, and development among the Yoruba people.”
The communiqué was jointly signed by Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi and Alaafin Abimbola Owoade, witnessed by Sir Dr
Kessington Adebutu, and officially issued by Aare Dr Kola Oyefeso, Secretary of the Communiqué Drafting Committee.
