Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) over the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries, describing the corporation’s invitation for him to visit the plants as “disrespectful”. Obasanjo’s comments came after the NNPCL invited him to tour the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, following his statement that the refineries were not functioning despite significant expenditure since 2007. The former president expressed frustration over the mismanagement of the refineries, noting that his successor, Musa Yar’Adua, had rejected a $750 million offer from Aliko Dangote to manage the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries.The NNPCL’s invitation was extended through a public statement, which Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, described as “disrespectful” to the office and person of the former president. Akinyemi stated that a formal invitation should have been sent to Obasanjo, rather than making a public announcement .Yar’Adua. The Afenifere Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, supported Obasanjo’s stance, describing the NNPCL’s invitation as “disrespectful” and “arrogant” ¹. The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, also backed Obasanjo, stating that the NNPCL’s invitation was a “public ridicule” and “utter disrespect” to the former president.
