The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against car snatching, arresting two notorious suspects in the state. The State Commandant, Mary Mbanugo, paraded the suspects, Anayo Obekwe, 51, and Kenneth Alamonye, 53, in Owerri on Wednesday.
According to Mbanugo, the duo was arrested for allegedly snatching a navy blue Toyota Corolla car at gunpoint in Umuahia, Abia State. The stolen vehicle was later recovered at Umuodu Mbieri, Mbaitoli LGA of Imo State.
Obekwe claimed to be a mechanic who was unaware that the vehicle brought to him for repair was stolen. However, Alamonye, identified as the prime suspect, confessed to the crime.
The arrests and recovery of the stolen vehicle were made possible through the command’s surveillance and new security strategies, which have been effective in cracking down on car snatching syndicates.
Mbanugo assured Imo residents that adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure their safety during the yuletide season. She urged them to feel free to come home for the festivities, confident that the NSCDC is working tirelessly to combat crime and criminality in the state.
This development comes as the NSCDC continues to intensify its efforts to tackle car snatching and other crimes across the country. Similar arrests have been made in other states, including Kano, where operatives of the NSCDC arrested two suspected car snatchers in October 2023.
