The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been tasked by northern youths to ensure that the principle of federal character is upheld in its impending mass retirement exercise. This call is aimed at promoting regional balance and fairness in the bank’s staffing.
The northern youths emphasized that the mass retirement should reflect the country’s diverse regional representation, urging the CBN to adhere to the federal character principle as stipulated in the Nigerian Constitution ¹. This principle aims to ensure that appointments and recruitments into government institutions, including the CBN, are fairly distributed across the country’s six geopolitical zones.
Demands by Northern Youths:
- Regional Balance: Ensure that the mass retirement exercise reflects the country’s regional diversity.
- Federal Character Principle: Adhere to the principle of federal character as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
- Transparency and Accountability: Ensure that the retirement process is transparent, fair, and free from bias.
The northern youths warned that any perceived marginalization or imbalance in the mass retirement exercise could lead to unrest and undermine the bank’s credibility. They urged the CBN to prioritize fairness, equity, and regional balance in its staffing decisions.
