Alhaji Shettima Yerima, President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), has revealed that some northerners who actively campaigned for and voted President Bola Tinubu into office in 2023 are now grappling with regret. Yerima’s statement, made in an interview with Saturday Vanguard, underscores the widespread disappointment with the current administration’s handling of the country’s economic situation.

The northern region, which had high expectations from Tinubu’s government, feels let down by the administration’s inability to correct the perceived wrongs of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Yerima emphasized that the eight years under Buhari’s leadership yielded no tangible benefits for the north, leading to a heightened sense of anticipation from Tinubu’s government.

Yerima’s sentiments echo those of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), which declared in April 2024 that Nigerians in the region regret their support for Tinubu in the 2023 election. The NEF stressed that such mistakes would not be repeated in 2027. This growing discontent has sparked moves among some political bigwigs in the region aimed at removing the president from Aso Rock Villa in 2027.
