The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism regarding the alleged $2 billion spent on refineries repair. Obasanjo had expressed skepticism about the viability of the investment, citing historical challenges faced during his administration in efforts to revamp Nigeria’s refining capacity. NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, acknowledged Obasanjo’s stature and contributions but emphasized the company’s recent transformation. Soneye highlighted that NNPCL has shifted from a loss-making entity to a profit-oriented global energy leader, with the refinery rehabilitations being comprehensive overhauls designed to meet world-class standards.The NNPCL also extended an invitation to Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries, allowing him to assess the progress firsthand. This move is seen as an attempt to showcase the company’s achievements and address Obasanjo’s concerns. It’s worth noting that Obasanjo had previously revealed that the NNPCL turned down a $750 million offer from billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote to manage the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries in 2007. This revelation has sparked further debate about the management of Nigeria’s refineries and the allocation of funds for their repair.
