The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed disappointment and frustration over President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s failure to honour an alleged pre-election agreement. According to Prince Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son, met with him in Abuja before the 2023 general election, with the approval of his father, to discuss the release of Nnamdi Kanu.The alleged agreement stipulated that IPOB would not boycott the polls if President Tinubu released Nnamdi Kanu after assuming office. However, nearly two years after President Tinubu’s inauguration, Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention despite the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, recusing herself from the case. Prince Emmanuel Kanu described the situation as “disappointing” and “shameful,” emphasizing that those who claim to be honourable have failed to keep their word.The IPOB leader’s continued detention has sparked widespread criticism, with many arguing that the Nigerian courts lack jurisdiction to try him. The Appeal Court had earlier discharged Nnamdi Kanu of the charges and ordered his release, but the previous administration declined to comply. The Supreme Court also determined that his bail ought not to have been revoked, but this ruling has been ignored by the courts and the government.
