The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has granted approval to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to participate in the Identification for Development (ID4D) project. This development marks a significant milestone in the quest to leverage digital identification for enhanced service delivery and economic growth in Nigeria.The ID4D project, which is supported by the World Bank, aims to strengthen Nigeria’s identity ecosystem and promote the use of digital identification for various purposes, including tax administration. By participating in the project, FIRS seeks to harness the potential of digital identification to improve tax compliance, reduce evasion, and enhance revenue collection.NIMC’s approval is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of digital identification in driving economic development. The commission’s mandate to establish and manage a national identity database makes it a critical partner in the ID4D project.The participation of FIRS in the ID4D project is expected to yield numerous benefits, including improved tax administration, enhanced revenue collection, and increased transparency. By leveraging digital identification, FIRS can better track tax payments, identify defaulters, and provide targeted support to taxpayers.
