Nigerians can expect an increase in telecommunications tariffs soon, but the good news is that it won’t be the 100% hike that telecom operators have been pushing for.
This assurance comes from the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who revealed that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will approve the new tariffs and make them public soon.
The minister emphasized that the government aims to strike a balance between protecting consumers and ensuring that telecom companies can continue to invest in the sector. He also noted that the government will no longer leave investments in infrastructure to private companies alone, recognizing the need to accelerate investment in communication infrastructure.
The Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, echoed the minister’s sentiments, stating that the commission has put measures in place to ensure that the tariff increase is fair and transparent. This includes revising quality of service regulations and requiring Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to comply with
simplified templates to show charges per minute for voice calls, SMS, and data. While the exact percentage of the tariff increase is yet to be announced, Nigerians can expect to pay more for their telecom services. However, the government’s assurance that the increase will not be as high as 100% provides some relief.It’s worth noting that telecom subscribers have been urging telcos to consider alternatives to tariff hikes, and some have even threatened to shutdown the sector if the hike is not approved .
