Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat, has sounded the alarm on the need for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s housing sector. Jibrin made the call during the Africa Housing Awards 2024, where he was honored as the ‘Housing Friendly Legislator’ of the Year.
In his acceptance speech, Jibrin emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the sector, citing outdated laws and inefficiencies as major barriers to progress. He pledged to sponsor legislation aimed at modernizing the sector, promoting efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness to the needs of Nigerians.
The Need for Reforms
Jibrin stressed that the future of Nigeria’s housing sector lies in reforming archaic laws that have stifled progress and innovation. He noted that the country’s growing urban housing demands require sustainable development solutions, which can only be achieved through bold reforms.
Collaboration and Legislative Support
Jibrin also underscored the importance of collaboration among government agencies, private developers, and other stakeholders to drive innovation and sustainability in housing. He emphasized that legislators have a critical role to play in creating an enabling environment where every citizen can access quality housing, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Awards and Recognition
The Africa Housing Awards 2024 celebrated significant contributions to addressing Africa’s housing challenges, with Hon. Jibrin’s recognition reinforcing his impact and commitment to legislative reforms. Jibrin dedicated the award to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and extended his appreciation to the coordinator of the Africa Housing Awards, Festus Adebayo.
