Three Nigerian women, Adetunji Opeyemi Elizabeth, Aladetan Rachael Tinuola, and Adebayo Blessing Favour, detained in Karada Prison, Baghdad, Iraq, are urgently calling on the Nigerian government to facilitate their immediate repatriation.
The women, arrested for lacking residence permits, claim they traveled to Iraq willingly in search of better opportunities but faced unsafe working conditions, threats, and eventually, detention. The women have been detained since September 2024 and are
pleading for government intervention to expedite their repatriation. Describing the prison conditions as challenging, citing poor food quality, health issues, and inadequate medical assistance.
The absence of a Nigerian embassy in Iraq has left the women isolated, highlighting the challenges faced by Nigerian migrants in countries without direct representation.The women’s plight has sparked concerns about the treatment of Nigerian migrants in foreign countries and the need for government intervention to protect their rights and facilitate their safe return home.
