Nigerian Immigration Service Launches Awareness Campaign Against Irregular Migration
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has concluded a one-week sensitization campaign across nine border states to combat irregular migration and migrant smuggling. The initiative, held from November 5-8, 2024, targeted local communities, traditional rulers, educational institutions, religious groups, and marketplaces.
In Cross River State, bordering Cameroon, the NIS engaged with residents, emphasizing the dangers of irregular migration and migrant smuggling. Comptroller Prisca Ogbodo urged personnel to become ambassadors against human trafficking and migrant smuggling, aligning with their statutory duties.
As a border state, Cross River is vulnerable to irregular migration, making awareness crucial. The campaign sparked meaningful discussions, with market traders demanding stronger government action against human and organ trafficking. Former victims shared harrowing experiences during town hall meetings.
