The Nigerian Government, through the Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has issued a stern warning to data controllers and processors, threatening substantial fines for non-compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) of 2023. This warning was disclosed by the National Commissioner/CEO of the Commission, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, in a video outlining the Commission’s 2025 agenda. Dr. Olatunji emphasized that the NDPC will embark on massive enforcement, imposing heavy penalties on defaulting data controllers and processors. He assured Nigerians that their data rights, as guaranteed by the NDPA, will be fully protected. The Commissioner highlighted the NDPC’s extensive engagements with stakeholders across public and private sectors to promote awareness and compliance with the Commission’s mandate. Job Creation: The Commission will launch certified data protection professionals into the job market, where they can work with data controllers and processors.The NDPC’s efforts to promote data protection awareness will continue nationwide, ensuring that Nigerians’ personal data is safeguarded. With the NDPA in place, data controllers and processors must ensure compliance to avoid facing strict consequences.
