The World Trade Organization (WTO) has initiated the process of selecting its next Director-General, with incumbent Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala emerging as the sole contender. According to a notification from WTO General Council Chairman Petter Olberg, the organization accepted nominations until November 8.
As the deadline passed, Olberg confirmed that no additional candidates had come forward, leaving Dr. Okonjo-Iweala as the only nominee. This development was communicated to WTO members, highlighting the incumbent’s interest in serving a second term.
The WTO’s formal procedure for appointing a Director-General dictates that the Chairman must inform members of all received nominations after the submission deadline. In this case, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy was the sole submission.
Olberg’s statement clarified that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s notification, as outlined in the Procedures for the Appointment of Directors-General, was circulated to all members alongside his communication dated September 16, 2024.
With Dr. Okonjo-Iweala unopposed, the WTO will proceed with the next stages of the appointment process. Her candidacy will undergo review and confirmation, paving the way for a potential second term as Director-General.
