The South-eastern caucus of the House of Representatives has called on tertiary institutions in the region to verify the data of students benefiting from the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
The lawmakers made the call after observing the absence of beneficiaries from schools in tertiary institutions in the South-east. They expressed concern that many students from the region were not taking advantage of the loan scheme, which was established to support students in pursuing higher education.
The NELFUND is a government-backed loan scheme designed to provide financial assistance to students in tertiary institutions. However, the lawmakers noted that many students from the South-east were not benefiting from the scheme due to lack of awareness and inadequate data verification.
To address this issue, the lawmakers urged the tertiary institutions in the region to verify the data of their students to ensure that they are eligible for the loan scheme. They also called on the institutions to raise awareness about the NELFUND and encourage students to apply for the loan.
The Chairman of the South-eastern caucus, Hon. Enyinnaya Abaribe, stated that the lawmakers were committed to ensuring that students from the region benefited from the NELFUND. He emphasized the importance of education in the development of the region and the country as a whole.
The call by the lawmakers comes as a welcome development for students in the South-east, who have been facing financial challenges in pursuing higher education. With the verification of students’ data, more students from the region are expected to benefit from the NELFUND and pursue their academic goals without financial burdens.
