The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has taken a significant step towards bolstering its cybersecurity measures by earmarking N35 million in its 2025 budget proposal. This move comes on the heels of a devastating cyber attack that compromised the agency’s website on December 18, 2024, just after publishing its crime experience and security perception survey.
According to the NBS, Nigerians paid a staggering N2.23 trillion as ransom between May 2023 and April 2024. The agency’s 2025 budget proposal, totaling N9.85 billion, outlines several key initiatives aimed at enhancing its operational efficiency and service delivery.
The NBS’s decision to prioritize cybersecurity is a welcome development, given the increasing threat of cyber attacks on government institutions. The agency’s commitment to enhancing its digital infrastructure will undoubtedly play a critical role in safeguarding its data and ensuring the integrity of its operations.
