The National Assembly has begun the 2025 budget defence today, January 7, 2025, with budget defence meetings scheduled between the Appropriations, Finance, and other relevant committees of both Houses and Ministries,
Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of government. This development marks a significant milestone in the budget consideration process, which is expected to be completed within a relatively short timeframe.
Budget Defence Schedule
The budget defence sessions are expected to last until January 17, with reports from the exercise likely to be harmonized on January 22. The Appropriations Committee’s report will be laid at plenary on January 31.
The Senate has also announced that it will suspend plenary for two weeks upon resumption from its Christmas and New Year break on January 14. The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations,
Mr. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, has assured that the panel and standing committees will be thorough with the budget defence in the interest of Nigerians. He noted that agencies that fail to appear for budget defence will be sanctioned.
Focus Areas
The budget defence sessions will focus on scrutinizing the proposed budgetary expenditure, revenues, and other issues contained in the 2025 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
