In a groundbreaking moment for Namibia, Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been elected the country’s first female president, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s history. The ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party’s candidate won the presidential election with 57% of the votes, surpassing the required 50% threshold.
Election Delays: The announcement of the results was delayed due to technical glitches and ballot paper shortages, which extended voting in some areas.
Opposition Reaction: Panduleni Itula, of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), came second with 26% of the votes, and the IPC has vowed to challenge the election outcome in court, describing the process as “deeply flawed”.
National Assembly Results: Nandi-Ndaitwah-led SWAPO won a majority of seats, 51 out of 96, while the IPC secured 20 seats.
“The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said after being declared president-elect. Her victory extends SWAPO’s 34-year rule in Namibia since leading the country to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990.
Nandi-Ndaitwah joins an exclusive club of female African presidents, alongside Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan. Her win has sparked interest globally, with many watching to see how her leadership will shape Namibia’s future.
