A dramatic and tragic incident unfolded in Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday, as an angry mob brutally killed a suspected armed robber who allegedly broke into the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was caught while attempting to flee with stolen items from the church, located behind Modern Market in Makurdi town. Local youths confronted and overwhelmed the suspect, ultimately leading to his gruesome demise.
The lifeless body of the alleged robber lay in a pool of blood, sending shockwaves through the community. Passersby, including those en route to midweek church services and market, scrambled to escape the scene.
Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, verified the incident. However, she noted that authorities cannot confirm whether the deceased was indeed a robber, as no formal report of theft had been filed.
“The police are still investigating the matter, and we urge anyone with information to come forward,” Anene stated. The corpse has been taken to a morgue in Makurdi.
This incident raises concerns about the resort to mob justice and the need for effective law enforcement in addressing criminal activities.
