The Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Friday said Yushau Shuaibu, who was arrested over attempted suicide on July 8 has been released.
Yushau Shuaibu was arrested on July 8, 2024, for attempting to commit suicide by climbing a broadcast mast belonging to Aso radio in Katampe, Abuja. He claimed that he was attempting to draw attention to the economic hardship in the country.
Shuaibu was sent to the FCTA’s Social Development Secretariat for evaluation and assessment.
He was released on bail to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, on July 18, 2024.
Shuaibu is a retired civil servant who served as a media consultant and intermediary between major security and response agencies and the media in Nigeria.
He is also a writer, author, and public relations practitioner who has published over 300 articles in various Nigerian dailies.
Yushau had explained that his action was to draw the attention of the federal government to the prevailing hardship in the country. He was subsequently sent to the FCTA’s Social Development Secretariat for mental assessment and evaluation.
According to the police, symptoms of anxiety, persistent worry and fears were observed in the course of profiling the suspect.
However, in a statement on Friday the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said Yushau was released on Thursday.
He was released on bail to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju.
