A devastating attack in central Mali has left at least nine people dead and several properties destroyed. The assault, which occurred in Segue village, claimed the life of a relative of a cleric and six other men, according to the diocese of the Mopti region.
The attack, described as a “terrorist attack” by the diocese secretary and priest, Daniel Camille Togo, also caused significant property damage. A civil society group, the Patriotic Movement for the Unity and Safeguarding of the Bankass Cercle, reported that the clinic, village pharmacy, and ambulance were set on fire, while the private car of the mayor of Segue was burned, and multiple motorbikes were taken away.
The group stated that the death toll from the attack had risen to nine, with seven fatalities in Segue and two in Sonfounou. The incident has sparked widespread concern, with many condemning the attack as a senseless act of violence.
Mali has been grappling with a political, security, and economic crisis since 2012, with Al-Qaeda and Islamic State group factions wreaking havoc in the region. The country is also facing a separatist insurgency in the volatile desert north.
The attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Mali and the need for continued international support to address the root causes of the conflict.
