The recent surge in attacks by the Lakurawa terror group in Sokoto and Kebbi states has raised concerns about the group’s origins. According to security expert Bulama Bukarti, the group is not a new phenomenon, but rather has been present in Nigeria for approximately six years.

Bukarti revealed that the group initially entered Nigeria illegally around 2016-2017 but did not establish permanent residency. Instead, they adopted a strategy of temporary stays, fleeing to the Sahel region or Niger Republic after brief periods.

“This group has been sporadically living or camping in the northwestern part of Nigeria for over six years now,” Bukarti explained during a Channels TV program. “Their modus operandi involves moving in, staying for a few months, and then retreating to their bases.”

Bukarti alleged that security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), were aware of the group’s existence. This raises questions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security measures.

The Defence Headquarters’ recent warning about the emergence of Lakurawa in the northwest region underscores the gravity of the situation. The group’s deadly attacks have claimed innocent lives, sparking widespread concern.

Bukarti’s revelations highlight the need for enhanced security cooperation and intelligence gathering to combat the growing threat posed by Lakurawa.
