In a bid to reduce plastic pollution and promote a cleaner environment, the Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to banning single-use plastics in the state.
The ban, which takes effect in January 2025, aims to minimize the harmful impact of plastic waste on the environment and public health. The Lagos State Government, through the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources,
Tokunbo Wahab, announced that the ban would prohibit the circulation of single-use plastics, including water sachets, shopping bags, and food packaging. This move is expected to significantly reduce plastic litter in streets and waterways,
mitigating flooding risks and improving the overall quality of life for residents. The ban on single-use plastics is a crucial step towards reducing plastic pollution in Lagos, which generates an estimated 14,000 metric tons of waste
daily. Single-use plastics constitute a substantial part of this waste, often ending up in water bodies, clogging drains, and affecting aquatic life. By limiting the use of single-use plastics, Lagos is positioning itself to reduce its carbon footprint and combat climate change more effectively.
While the ban is expected to have positive environmental benefits, stakeholders have raised concerns about the potential economic impact on businesses and residents. The Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP) has called for a phased implementation to allow businesses to adapt to the new regulations.
The Lagos State Government is urged to provide economic incentives, public awareness campaigns, and alternative packaging options to support businesses and residents during the transition.
